Getting Started

Choose the flow that matches your situation.

A) Create a new household (Household Owner)

Use this on the first device that will own and manage the household.

  1. 1Install BillPlex on your device.
  2. 2On the first screen, select “Create new household”.
  3. 3Set up your household members and (optionally) a monthly budget.

B) Join an existing household (Second person)

The fastest way: the Household Owner shows a QR code, and you scan it with your phone’s camera. The two phones pair themselves over the same Wi-Fi.

  1. 1On the Owner’s phone: open BillPlex → Settings → Sync. The QR code is already on screen — keep it open.
  2. 2On your phone: open the Camera app and point it at that QR code.
  3. 3Tap the BillPlex link that pops up. (If BillPlex isn’t installed yet, the App Store will open first — install it, then come back and scan again.)
  4. 4You’re in. Both phones now share the same household.

Already have BillPlex open? Tap “Scan QR code” inside the app instead.

C) Add more devices later

After the first pairing, the Household Owner can add more devices the same way — show a QR, scan, done.

  1. 1On the Owner’s phone: open Settings → Sync — the QR is right there on the screen.
  2. 2On the new device: open the Camera and scan the QR (or, inside BillPlex, tap “Scan QR code”).
  3. 3The new device joins the household automatically.

Household Sync

Keep multiple devices in sync for the same household — owner-controlled, local-first.

A) First-time setup between two devices

Use this flow when two people want to share the same household for the first time.

1) Steps for the Household Owner

  1. 1On the Household Owner’s phone, open BillPlex → Settings → Sync.
  2. 2The QR code is already showing on that screen — keep it open while the other phone scans it.

2) Steps for the second person (Join existing household)

  1. 1On the joining person’s phone, open the Camera and point it at the Owner’s QR.
  2. 2Tap the BillPlex link that appears. (If BillPlex isn’t installed yet, install it from the App Store, then scan again.)
  3. 3The two phones connect automatically over the same Wi-Fi — no Accept/Decline tap needed.

B) Adding more devices to the same household

  1. 1The Household Owner opens Settings → Sync on their phone. The QR is shown there by default.
  2. 2Each new device scans the QR with its Camera (or inside BillPlex, tap “Scan QR code”).
  3. 3Each device joins the household automatically.

C) Syncing after initial setup

  1. 1To sync updates, open Settings → Household Sync on the Household Owner’s device and on the devices you want to update.
  2. 2On the Household Owner’s device, tap “Sync now” (or the equivalent sync action).
  3. 3Keep the Household Sync screen open on all devices until the sync completes.

D) Removing / unpairing a device

  1. 1On the Household Owner’s phone, open BillPlex → Settings → Sync.
  2. 2Tap “Edit Household”, then remove the device you want to unpair from the list.

Tips & clarifications

  • The Household Owner controls which devices are part of the household.
  • Make sure Bluetooth/Wi-Fi (or required nearby permissions) are enabled on all devices.
  • Only one Household Owner device should act as the main source when syncing.
  • If a device does not appear, reopen the Household Sync screen or restart the app.
  • All transfers are local; household data is not uploaded to our servers.

Import / Export

Manual backups you control.

Export a backup

  1. 1Open the Export option in the app and set a PIN (minimum 4 digits).
  2. 2An encrypted backup file is created. Save or share it via your preferred method.
  3. 3The backup stays under your control — no cloud account required.

Use a non-trivial PIN and store backups in a safe location.

Import a backup

  1. 1Open Import (from Startup or Settings) and select your backup file.
  2. 2Enter the same PIN you used during export.
  3. 3Choose whether to merge or replace local data (when available), then confirm.

If the PIN is incorrect, the import cannot continue. We cannot recover your PIN.

  • Backups are encrypted and offline unless you choose to share them.
  • Optionally test an import on a secondary device before relying on a backup.

Troubleshooting

Quick fixes for common issues.

I can’t see my latest expenses

  • Check active filters (month/year/category/member).
  • Close and reopen the app.
  • Verify that your device date/time is correct.

Import failed or PIN not accepted

  • Check that you selected the correct backup file.
  • Make sure you entered the exact PIN used during export.
  • Move the file to local storage and try again.

Household Sync / pairing did not work

  • Make sure both phones are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Check that camera and Wi-Fi (and nearby) permissions are granted to BillPlex.
  • Confirm the Owner has Settings → Sync open (the QR is shown there by default) and the second phone is scanning it.
  • Close the Sync screen and reopen it on both devices, or restart the app, then scan the QR again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add an expense?
Open BillPlex → tap Add Expense → fill in amount, date, category, notes, member, and whether it is shared or personal → Save.
Where is my data stored?
Your expense data is stored locally on your device. You can optionally export an encrypted backup and move it manually between devices. See the Privacy Policy.
How do two people share one household?
One person creates the household and becomes the Household Owner. They open Settings → Sync — the QR code is right there on the screen. The second person opens their phone’s Camera, scans that QR, and the two phones pair automatically over the same Wi-Fi. From then on, the Owner can add more devices the same way.
Is the app free?
BillPlex is free to download during launch. Core functionality will remain free; some advanced features may become optional in-app purchases.

BillPlex is built with privacy in mind. Your data stays on your devices, with optional encrypted backups and Household Sync fully controlled by you.
