How to track expenses without connecting your bank account

Most expense trackers demand your bank login on day one. You do not need it — manual and smart capture is faster than you think, and far more private.

Open most expense trackers and the very first screen wants one thing: your bank login. The pitch is convenience — connect once, and every transaction flows in automatically. The unspoken cost is that a third party now reads your entire financial life, indefinitely.

A lot of people are not comfortable with that trade, and they should not have to be. You can track every euro accurately without ever connecting a bank. Here is how, and why it is often the better way.

Why apps want your bank login — and what it costs

Bank connections run through aggregators like Plaid or Tink. They give the app auto-import, which is genuinely convenient. In exchange, your full transaction history — every merchant, every amount, every date — leaves your control and sits with companies you never chose. It is also one more place that can be breached.

Manual and smart capture is faster than you think

The fear is that logging by hand is tedious. Modern apps have made it nearly instant. Three ways to capture an expense in seconds, no bank required:

  • Voice: say “40 gas, 3 coffee” and two expenses appear, categorised
  • Receipt photo: snap it and let OCR fill amount, date and merchant
  • Quick add: a couple of taps for the common ones
  • Recurring: set rent and subscriptions once, they log themselves

You gain something auto-import quietly takes away

Auto-import is passive, and passive tracking stops working the moment you stop reading it. Logging an expense — even by voice for three seconds — keeps you aware of what you are spending as you spend it. That small friction is the whole point of tracking; it is where the behaviour change actually happens.

The privacy is not a side effect — it is the design

No bank login means there is no master key to your accounts sitting in an app, no aggregator holding your history, nothing to leak in someone else’s breach. Your spending data simply never leaves your phone.

The most private place for your financial data is the device in your pocket — not a server promising to guard it.

Bank-sync is a convenience you can opt out of without losing anything that matters. Accurate tracking was never about the connection. It was about the habit.
